I hate to complain... No one is without difficulties, whether in high or low life, and every person knows best where their own shoe pinches.

About This Quote

In the beginning, I didn’t even know what complaining was. I was brought up to never complain to my parents, who taught me to never say a bad thing about anyone. So, as a child, I had no idea that complaining was a normal part of life. When I look back now, I realize that complaining is something people do because they feel they have been wronged or that someone has wronged them.

I don’t think that complaining is necessarily a negative thing. In fact, it can be very motivating if done the right way. In this quote, Jonathan Swift speaks about complaining in a humorous way.

He uses the word “pinch” as if he is referring to the pain someone’s feet may have from walking around all day long without shoes on. The fact that he makes it sound like a good thing shows how easy it is to take things too seriously at times and think of nothing but negativity. Perhaps Swift himself could have benefited from being reminded that complaining isn’t always a bad thing.
